Global Leadership in Addressing Chronic Disease

As a leader in addressing chronic disease around the world, Medtronic supports several awareness initiatives. A recent example involved soccer legend Lucas Radebe leading thousands of football fans in taking their pulse during halftime at the Nedbank Cup Final at Soccer City in Johannesburg, South Africa, on May 22, 2010. The Know Your Pulse event was coordinated by Medtronic Foundation Patient Link grantee Prevent Arrhythmic Cardiac Events (PACE) to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and its symptoms. Radebe himself received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator after experiencing a heart arrhythmia.


Collaborative Culture of Innovation

Product innovation is a cornerstone of Medtronic’s ability to bring effective therapies to patients. Physician collaboration was key to incorporating significant enhancements to our InterStim Therapy for urinary control. Together, Medtronic U.S. Senior Program Director Martin Gerber and Italian urologist Dr. Michele Spinelli developed a better implant procedure, making the surgery less invasive.


Total Employee Engagement

Creating an inclusive corporate culture is one way Medtronic fosters employee engagement, but doing so requires enthusiastic, daily leadership from individuals such as Sharon Piper-Diggs. A Human Resources Director, Piper-Diggs helped establish four Inclusion Councils, seven Employee Resource Groups, and two Professional Association Networks at Medtronic’s CardioVascular business in Santa Rosa, California, USA.


Progressive Environmental Stewardship

Medtronic employees in Tolochenaz, Switzerland successfully reduced total regulated and non-regulated waste at their facility, and also recycled 62 percent of the remaining waste. This resulted in a 77 percent decrease in overall disposal costs and a $70,000 savings.
