Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gasses from certain solids and liquids. In fiscal year 2010, Medtronic generated 134 metric tonnes of VOC air emissions. This represents a 14 percent decrease from fiscal year 2009, normalized to revenue. Implementation of process modifications at our locations in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, USA; Danvers, Massachusetts, USA; and Galway, Ireland contributed to this decrease.
Medtronic Northridge Manufacturing Innovations Reduce Chemical Use, VOC Emissions
Medtronic’s Diabetes organization in Northridge, California, USA successfully integrated environmental improvements into its redesigned sensor and pump manufacturing lines. Use of LEAN manufacturing techniques along with new automation of a coating process decreased related VOC emissions by 90 percent and reduced chemical use by 99 percent. Additionally, improvements made in the collection of scrap circuit boards from pumps reduced waste by 1.8 metric tonnes and contributed to savings of $1.5 million.
