Volunteerism and Giving

At Medtronic, we believe that volunteerism and employee giving are vital components of employee engagement. To foster participation, we let employees follow their passions and support their local communities through easily accessible programs.

For example, our Volunteer Grants encourage employees to pursue causes close to their hearts while lending their talents to the local community, whether working at a food shelf, coaching youth sports, or mentoring students. For every 25 hours of employee service to a qualifying nonprofit/non-government organization, the Medtronic Foundation awards $500 annually. The Foundation also matches employee donations to the organization up to an additional $500.

Employees also access enterprise-wide volunteer programs designed to impact local communities, through Medtronic’s Community Affairs department. These include Mission in Motion, Project 6 and Disaster Relief.

Employee Participation in Volunteerism

Approximately 24 percent of Medtronic employees reported volunteering during fiscal year 2010, compared to 16 percent in fiscal year 2009.

Employee Giving

In Fiscal year 2010, Medtronic coordinated concurrent Live United United Way giving campaigns in 10 U.S. locations:

  • Danvers, Massachusetts
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Louisville, Colorado
  • Memphis, Tennessee
  • Redmond, Washington
  • Santa Rosa, California
  • Sunnyvale, California
  • Tempe, Arizona
  • Warsaw, Indiana
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota

The campaigns, in which Medtronic matches employee donations dollar-for-dollar, raised a total of $5.4 million and achieved an overall increase in giving across our U.S. facilities. Several locations showed outstanding growth due to the collaboration and shared resources of the coordinated campaign, including Jacksonville, Florida and Louisville, Colorado, which more than doubled their donations from the previous year. Our Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota campaign came in at 96 percent of our goal, a positive result given the challenging economic landscape.

Medtronic is one of 120 international companies with more than 10,000 employees that gave over $2.5 million to United Way last year.

The Medtronic Foundation Matching Gifts to Education program also matches employee contributions made to U.S. educational institutions dollar for dollar up to $15,000 per year. In Fiscal year 2010, $1.5 million in matching dollars was given to 713 institutions in 44 U.S. states.
