Public Policy Development & Political Contributions
In fiscal year 2011, Medtronic supported international public policy development across developed and emerging markets to improve patient and health system access to medical technology therapies. Our multi-disciplinary team, which includes individuals from Government Affairs, International Relations, Reimbursement and Health Economics, Regulatory Affairs, Communications, and the Medtronic Foundation engaged in the following activities:
- Advocacy and support for healthcare policy related to reimbursement and funding, health technology assessment (HTA), regulatory approvals and post-market surveillance, procurement and pricing in regards to medical technology therapies.
- Advocacy and support for healthcare policy that strengthens the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Medtronic and the Medtronic Foundation supported the World Economic Forum (WEF), Global Health Council, Clinton Global Initiative, NCD Alliance, Global Social Observatory and other organizations to build a multi-stakeholder dialogue in preparation for the September 2011 UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and beyond. Specifically, Medtronic and the Medtronic Foundation supported innovative partnerships to drive health promotion, disease prevention, health system strengthening and innovative health care delivery to reduce the health and socio-economic burdens posed by NCDs.
- Launch of the International Partnership for Innovative Healthcare Delivery (IPIHD) at the WEF annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland in January 2011. This unique partnership, of which Medtronic is a founding member, seeks to identify, replicate and scale up innovative models of healthcare delivery around the world.
- Launch of the Workplace Wellness Alliance, also introduced at the January 2011 WEF meeting. Through this alliance, Medtronic and 40+ organizations have committed to advance workplace health and productivity by sharing knowledge and promoting the use of standardized metrics to increase the reach and impact of this work.
