Diabetes Business Overview

FY2011 Revenue
Diabetes accounted for $1.27 billion, or 8%, of Medtronic's $15.9 billion in revenue in FY2011

Diabetes is our fifth-largest business. For more than 25 years, we’ve been helping people with diabetes manage their glucose levels and live longer, healthier lives.

A major milestone in that effort was the introduction of our insulin pump therapy. We now offer the only FDA-approved integrated diabetes management system consisting of an insulin pump, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and therapy management software.

Studies demonstrate this integrated system can provide superior glucose control compared to multiple daily injections (MDI) so the risk of long-term complications from diabetes can be reduced1. It also extends our lead on the path to developing an artificial pancreas—a “closed-loop” insulin delivery system.

Our world-leading diabetes management solutions include:

  • Advanced insulin delivery systems2 that can offer improved glucose control as well as greater predictability, individualization and flexibility in the lives of people with diabetes.
  • Continuous glucose monitoring that provides glucose information in real-time. Personal CGM3 enables people with diabetes to react to high or low glucose levels before they become dangerous. Also, trend alerts can make notifications of rapid changes in glucose levels so immediate corrective or preventative action can be taken after a fingerstick glucose measurement confirmation. Professional CGM4 is a clinician-owned device that collects glucose data for retrospective review. It helps clinicians gain insights not obtainable with tests and fingersticks alone to improve diabetes care for the patients they treat.
  • Therapy management software5 that gives new and unique insights into the effects that specific foods, exercise and/or stress can have on glucose levels. This data allows clinicians and their patients to make therapy and behavior adjustments to improve glucose control.
