Neuromodulation Business Overview
FY2008 Revenue
Neuromodulation accounted for $1.3 billion, or 10%, of Medtronic's $13.5 billion in revenue in FY2008.
Neuromodulation is the second-oldest and fourth-largest of Medtronic's business units. It was formed as we transferred our expertise in heart electrical stimulation to treat diseases and conditions involving the nervous system. Today, our products include neurostimulation systems and implantable drug delivery systems for chronic pain, common movement disoroders, and urologic and gastrointestinal disorders.
Our products include:
- Activa® Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy1 uses an implanted neurostimulation system to stimulate specific targets in the brain to treat Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia (under a humanitarian device exemption). Stimulation can be noninvasively adjusted to meet each patient's needs. Activa Therapy has been used by more than 40,000 patients worldwide.
- Medtronic Pain Therapies™ encompass pain management therapies from our neurostimulation2 and drug delivery areas3. Both neurostimulation and intrathecal drug delivery can be effective options for patients with pain who are experiencing inadequate pain relief or uncomfortable side effects from their current pain treatments.
- Enterra® Therapy4 treats chronic nausea and vomiting associated with gastroparesis when conventional drug therapies are not effective. Gastroparesis is a stomach disorder in which food moves through the stomach more slowly than normal. In some patients, this condition results in severe, chronic nausea and vomiting, which cannot be adequately controlled by available drugs. These patients have difficulty eating and may require some form of tube feeding to ensure adequate nutrition.
- InterStim® Therapy for Urinary Control5 is the only implantable treatment to use electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves to manage the disabling symptoms of overactive bladder, including urinary urge incontinence and urinary retention.
- Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy (ITB TherapySM)6 eases intractable spasticity in patients with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and stroke by delivering Lioresal® Intrathecal (baclofen injection) directly to the intrathecal space in small, precisely controlled doses using a pump that is surgically placed in the abdomen.
- Prostiva® RF Therapy7 is an in-office treatment for men over the age of 50 suffering from an enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. Prostiva RF Therapy is an effective, safe, and fast treatment that is associated with few side affects and adverse events. The therapy delivers low-level radio frequency energy through a tube inserted into the urethra to shrink enlarged prostate tissue, while preserving the urethra and adjacent structures from harm. This precisely focused energy ablates prostate tissue, reducing constriction of the urethra, and relieving many of the obstructive and irritating voiding symptoms patients suffer due to BPH.
