Spinal and Biologics Business Overview
FY2011 Revenue
Spinal and Biologics accounted for $3.34 billion, or 21%, of Medtronic's $15.9 billion in revenue in FY2011
Our market leadership is largely a result of our innovation: we're developing many of the new standards of care in spinal and musculoskeletal therapies.
Our Spine business collaborates with world-renowned surgeons, researchers, and innovative partners to offer a broad range of state-of-the-art products and technologies. These therapies, ranging from dynamic stabilization devices to minimally invasive therapies, return patients to normal active lives more quickly, and treat a variety of neurological, orthopaedic, and spinal conditions.
The Biologics business is the global leader in biologics regeneration and pain therapies across a variety of musculoskeletal applications including spine, orthopaedic trauma and dental.
Kyphon develops medical devices that treat a variety of conditions of the aging spine including spine fractures caused by osteoporosis and cancer. Other devices help restore and preserve spinal function and diagnose the source of low back pain.
Medtronic’s Spine and Biologics businesses are headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., while the Kyphon business is located in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Key therapies for the three businesses include:
Minimal Access Spine Technologies. These technologies are used for treating painful conditions of the spine, such as degenerative disc disease. We work hard to continually make our spine systems less invasive, so surgery can be done with smaller incisions, more precision, less damage to the surrounding tissue, and faster recovery times.
Balloon Kyphoplasty. This procedure offers a minimally invasive procedure for repairing fractures in the spine and is mainly used for fractures caused by osteoporosis. It uses small balloons designed to restore vertebral body height. Bone cement is inserted into the bone to stabilize the fracture.
Fusion Systems.1 These systems correct and stabilize abnormal spine curves. The systems are also used to treat degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, fracture, dislocation, failed previous fusions, and or tumors.
Artificial Cervical Discs.2 Our innovative products replace damaged or degenerated discs in the neck. Our latest disc is made of stainless steel and designed to allow motion in patients.
Interspinous Spacer Implant. The X-STOP® Interspinous Process Decompression (IPD®) System is for patients who have LSS, suffer symptoms of neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) and who are able to relieve their symptoms when they bend forward or flex their spines. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which typically takes 45 to 90 minutes. In some patients it can be performed with local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.3
Biologics Products. The Biologics portfolio contains a full range of bone grafting options ranging from synthetic scaffolds, allograft therapies & rhBMP-2. The cornerstone of our portfolio is our rhBMP-2 INFUSE® Bone Graft,5, 6, 7 a biologic that stimulates the body to regrow bone, and eliminates the need to harvest bone from another area of the patient’s body, thus eliminating an additional, often painful surgery. INFUSE® Bone Graft is currently cleared for use for the below indications:
- INFUSE® Bone Graft/ Medtronic Titanium Threaded Interbody Fusion Device is indicated for anterior spinal fusion procedures (ALIF) in skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) at one level from L2-S1
- Indicated for treating acute open tibial shaft fractures that have been stabilized with IM nail fixation, and must be applied within 14 days after the initial fracture. Prospective patients should also be skeletally mature.
- Indicated as an alternative to autogenous bone graft for sinus augmentations, and for localized alveolar ridge augmentations for defect associated extraction sockets.
