Spinal and Biologics Business Overview
FY2008 Revenue
Spinal and Biologics accounted for $3.0 billion, or 22%, of Medtronic's $13.5 billion in revenue in FY2008.
Spinal and Biologics is Medtronic's second-largest business. Our market leadership is largely a result of our innovation: we're developing many of the new standards of care in spinal and musculoskeletal therapies. We collaborate with world-renowned surgeons, researchers, and innovative partners to offer state-of-the-art therapies for spinal, neurological, orthopedic, and oral maxillofacial conditions.
Our key product lines include:
- Minimal Access Spine Technologies (MAST™) for treating painful conditions of the spine, such as degenerative disc disease. We work hard to continually make our spinal systems less invasive, so surgery can be done with much smaller incisions, more precision, less damage to the surrounding tissue, and faster recovery times.
- Fusion systems1 that correct and stabilize abnormal spine curves.
- Artificial cervical discs2 to replace damaged or degenerated discs in the neck. Our latest disc is made of surgical-grade stainless steel and allows motion so patients can go back to doing everyday activities they love.
- Infuse® Bone Graft,3 a biologic that stimulates the body to regrow bone and is used to treat certain spinal, tibial, and maxillofacial conditions. Infuse Bone Graft eliminates the need to harvest bone from another area of the patient's body, thus eliminating an additional, often painful, surgery.
