Surgical Technologies Business Overview

Surgical Technologies is Medtronic’s sixth-largest business. Through our partnership with surgeons and nurses in the field, we develop innovative technology and techniques that improve patients’ lives. The Surgical Technologies business designs and manufactures products for the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) diseases and cranial, spinal, and neurologic conditions. Many of our products are minimally invasive. This business comprises the following divisions:
Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT)
Our products help physicians provide relief to patients with ENT disorders, such as sinusitis, diseases of the head and neck, thyroid conditions, and sleep-disordered breathing. Key product lines include:
- Powered surgery systems and microendoscopy instruments for more precise tissue removal, such as the Straightshot® M4 and the Visao® Otologic Drill with the Integrated Power Console (IPC™) system
- Intraoperative nerve monitoring systems like the NIM-Response® monitor that help reduce the risk of nerve damage during surgery
- Fusion™ ENT Navigation and image-guided surgery systems that help enable a safer, more thorough procedure by providing real-time images of the instrument’s position in the patient’s anatomy
- Disposable and dissolvable fluid control products to aid in the immediate postoperative healing period
Neurologic Technologies
We develop surgical devices and implantable products for the treatment of cranial, spinal and neurologic diseases, including hydrocephalus, spinal disorders, cranial tumors, and vascular lesions. Our main product lines include the following:
- Powered pneumatic and electric drill systems with standardized tools and attachments that deliver maximum torque and performance, such as the Midas Rex® Legend EHS Stylus® Drill, Spine Shaver, and the Integrated Power Console (IPC) platform
- Hydrocephalus valves and shunts like the Strata® Adjustable Valve that enable easy, non-invasive adjustment and verification
- CSF drainage devices, including the Duet™ External Drainage and Monitoring System that is designed for both ventricular and lumbar drainage
- Dura repair implants for cranial closure, bone fixation, and pre-shaped cranial mesh
Navigation
By providing highly accurate visualization tools, we help surgeons make more informed decisions in the operating room, reduce surgery time, reduce patient risk, and potentially improve surgical outcomes. Our surgical navigation and intraoperative imaging solutions deliver real-time feedback on patient anatomy, instrument position, pathology status, and therapy placement for both preoperative procedure planning and intraoperative confirmation. Key products include:
- Intraoperative imaging solutions, such as the O-arm® 2D/3D Imaging System for spine and orthopedic surgeries, and the PoleStar® Surgical MRI System for neuro oncology procedures to help confirm total tumor resection
- Surgical navigation systems for cranial, neurologic, spinal, and ENT procedures based on the industry-leading StealthStation® Navigation System
- A next-generation navigation tracking technology, AxiEM™ electromagnetic tracking, that enables the use of surgical navigation in a broader range of procedures and patient types
