Diabetes
Diabetes is the fifth largest Medtronic business unit. For more than 25 years, we've been helping people with diabetes manage their glucose levels and live longer, healthier lives.
Today, we offer the only FDA-approved integrated diabetes management system. It includes an insulin pump, continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and therapy management software. Studies demonstrate this integrated system can provide superior glucose control compared to multiple daily injections (MDI) so the risk of long-term complications from diabetes can be reduced.1 It also extends our lead on the path to developing an artificial pancreas – a “closed-loop” insulin delivery system.

Insulin Pumps

Insulin pumps are devices that deliver precise doses of rapid-acting insulin to closely match the body’s needs. They are small in size and worn externally (not implanted), and can be discreetly clipped to a belt, slipped into a pocket, or hidden under clothing. Today, we have the only insulin pump integrated with continuous glucose monitoring.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems

With Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), people with diabetes get a more complete picture of their glucose levels, which can lead to better treatment decisions and better glucose control. CGM measures glucose levels in real time throughout the day and night. CGM provides the direction glucose levels are going; early notification of oncoming lows and highs; alerts for lows or highs while the patient is sleeping; and insights into how food, physical activity, medication, and illness impact glucose levels.
A CGM systems consists of:
- A glucose sensor inserted under the skin that measures glucose levels.
- A transmitter that sends the glucose information from the sensor to a monitor using radio frequency.
- A small external monitor (which may be built into an insulin pump or a stand-alone device) that displays glucose levels on a screen and notifies the user if it detects that glucose is reaching a high or low limit.

Therapy Management Software

A convenient online informatics tool that brings together critical information from a patient's insulin pump, continuous glucose monitor, and blood glucose meter. It organizes the information into reports, charts, and graphs that make therapy adjustment faster, easier, and more precise.
