Why do you enjoy working at Medtronic?

I enjoy the challenge of creating the next new product to help make patients' lives better, and then leading a great team of people that work on the 'front lines' to make that happen.

What do you love about your job?

I am passionate about innovation. It is challenging, exciting, and requires creativity, diligence, and perseverance. Medtronic has been supportive of both short-term and long-term innovation.

What is challenging about your job?

The most challenging aspect of the job is shouldering the responsibility for the products that we create for people in need, within budget and time constraints.

How do you give back?

I love science and engineering – so I give talks to encourage the next generation in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, from elementary school to college-level students.

What do you love about your current location?

Southern California is a pretty unbeatable location for activities, and of course the weather. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which was cloudy or partly cloudy 300 days of the year – so moving to Los Angeles area brought the sunshine, beaches, and Disneyland!

What is one random fact about you?

In graduate school, I had a part-time job as a biomedical engineer for a hospital in Pittsburgh, in which I assisted with inter-hospital emergency air transport (helicopters, Learjets) of patients on cardiac assist devices.

What advice would you give to job candidates?

While your academic skills are important to the job, outside activities are important too. Especially for innovation – diverse interests and backgrounds can spawn winning ideas that may seem unconventional.

How do you balance your life?

I couldn't do what I do without my family's support, and I am just as supportive of them. I have three girls – one in high school, one in middle school, and a first grader. I love watching my kids grow up, with each of the phases of their lives, and their incredibly diverse interests.
