The Bakken Invitation

The Bakken Invitation celebrates and connects people, who with the help of medical technology, are contributing in communities all around the world through charitable service and volunteerism.

It embraces the legacy of Medtronic co-founder and humanitarian Earl Bakken.

It culminates in the celebration of Bakken Invitation Honorees, who are recognized for outstanding contributions.

Apply for Award


Each year, honorees are selected from the Bakken Invitation Community for the Bakken Invitation Award, recognizing their extraordinary accomplishments. Each of these Bakken Honorees can nominate a charity to receive a $20,000 grant from the Medtronic Foundation, and travel to Hawaii to meet Medtronic co-founder Earl Bakken.


Bakken Award Applicant Criteria

  1. Be individuals who, with the help of medical technology, are giving their time and talent to improve the quality of life for others.
  2. Be 14 years or older.
  3. Currently use an approved medical device therapy to treat heart disease, diabetes, spinal disorders, chronic pain, or neurological, gastroenterological and urological disorders. There is no restriction on device manufacturer.
  4. Have an established relationship of involvement with a legal nonprofit organization for six months or more.

Please note: Medtronic employees are not eligible.


  • Applications for the 2016 Bakken Invitation Award close July 31, 2016.
  • Applications received after July 31 will be considered for the 2017 Award.
  • All applicants will be notified in September.
  • A public announcement of the honorees will occur in late fall.
  • Award celebration will take place in January 2017 in Hawaii.
