The management of perfusion, and even more importantly, the successful weaning of a patient from CPB, depend on your ability to accurately measure the patient's blood pressure. During the critical weaning period, the discrepancy between central arterial pressures and radial artery or other pressure measurements puts the pressure on you to make patient management decisions, often with unreliable numbers. Until now, the only way to obtain accurate central pressures was to stick a needle in the aorta.
