LDRP Functional Track: Human Resources

Why Medtronic: I had been working in Human Resources in the aerospace and defense industry, but was interested in healthcare after graduate school because of its long-term growth potential. I liked Medtronic's global opportunities and was impressed with all the people I met during the interview process.

Current role: After gaining international experience, I wanted to continue working in a global capacity, so I joined the Global Leadership and Talent Development Group. I helped launch Medtronic University, our global learning and development portal, and am working to continually improve resources for our employees. I research the skills our employees need for the future and make the training scalable for all geographies, considering our many cultures and languages.

LDRP experience and your impact: In the HR LDRP functional track, you take on two stretch assignments over two years to gain high-level experience across different areas of the company. My first assignment was in the Neuromodulation business unit, creating a structured new employee orientation program. The program is centered around the Neuromodulation business, culture, and processes, and helps new employees become fully integrated into the organization.

My second assignment helped me develop a global mindset. I worked in Shanghai, assessing how to become a recognized Employer of Choice. I developed the survey methodology and project plan, and provided recommendations to the leadership team based on the survey results. I also worked in Tokyo, helping implement a new methodology to help managers better understand the talent review process and identify high-potential talent.

Most rewarding LDRP project: My work in Tokyo was a great development opportunity. It was a brand-new experience for me and a new initiative for the international organization, so I was implementing a change and learning a lot as a result. To see the process successfully integrated into the international organization felt like a big accomplishment.

Greatest LDRP challenge: Understanding different cultures; learning how to execute projects in unfamiliar environments. Cultural understanding is now one of my greatest strengths. I'm constantly using my knowledge from the global assignment in my everyday work where I develop curriculum for a worldwide audience.

The Medtronic culture: It's one of collaboration and teamwork. While we come from many different backgrounds and cultures, the Medtronic Mission – to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend lives – serves as our common goal.

Education:
University of St. Thomas, bachelor's degree in Communications
University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, master's degree in Human Resources and Industrial Relations
