LDRP Functional Track: Finance

Why Medtronic: I was attracted to the healthcare industry because I wanted to work for a company making an impact on people's lives. When I evaluated my prior industry experience, I realized I was looking for a company where I could appreciate and understand how its technology directly helps patients, like Medtronic's. Everyone I knew who worked at Medtronic had universal praise for the company.

Current role: I'm in the Surgical Technologies business in Jacksonville, Florida, where I wear multiple financial hats. I evaluate acquisitions and distribution deals, look at divestiture opportunities, plan marketing budgets, and work on longer-term strategic planning activities. Basically, I help make sure our portfolio has the right products and technologies – products that patients need and that bring financial value.

LDRP experiences and your impact: My first assignment was in Corporate Finance with three mini rotations in Treasury, Planning, and Global Process Improvements. I was involved in high-level deals, including a sale-leaseback and a $1 billion debt issuance. I also helped business units refine their annual operating plans, and I developed standardized financial processes across our businesses. It was a challenging role that allowed me to contribute to the company's overall efficiencies and growth. Plus, it helped me see the big picture and appreciate critical organizational dynamics.

My second assignment was in Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management, where I worked closely with the U.S. Product Director to oversee finances for a specific product line. It was a true partnership, where I analyzed market trends and provided quantitative analysis for key strategic and investment decisions. One year after completing my MBA, I was the financial business partner for the equivalent of a $40 million business.

Favorite benefit of the LDRP: The high visibility and challenging assignments provided valuable work and development experience. I learned a great deal and also know that I made tangible contributions to the business. I also appreciated having a built-in network of colleagues. My LDRP class consisted of about 30 peers. Many became my friends, and they often serve as a sounding board when I have business or career-related questions.

Advice to MBA students pursuing the LDRP: While you have the opportunity to work in many business units and geographies, I recommend completing one assignment in Minneapolis. It helps you get to know the company and appreciate its rich history. The Twin Cities are a fantastic place to live. Growing up on the East coast, I didn't know Minneapolis had so much to offer.

Giving back to the LDRP: I care a lot about Medtronic, our Mission, and our ongoing success, so I want to make sure we continue to hire great people. I have the opportunity to go back to campus and help with recruiting efforts for the LDRP. It's fun and I'm proud to tell the great story of Medtronic and all our innovations that improve people's lives.
