LDRP Functional Track: Marketing
Why Medtronic: I was attracted to Medtronic's technology expertise and industry leadership. I felt I could learn a lot, as well as contribute to the organization. That turned out to be true with my summer internship, where I helped shape the Asia-Pacific marketing strategy. I was eager to join the LDRP after business school and gain even more challenging experiences in Medtronic's diverse businesses.
Internship experience and your impact: My internship was in Business Development for our automated external defibrillator business. I analyzed our market position and made strategic recommendations on developing business in four Asia-Pacific markets. I helped the company understand the complexities of the local markets, which is critical to success for a global company.
Advice to summer associates: The more effort you put into your summer experience, the more you'll learn and get out of it. Immerse yourself in the company – ask questions, and be open and flexible to different experiences. Medtronic's internships are designed to be challenging and to have a significant impact on the business.
LDRP experiences and your impact: My first assignment was in International Market Development at our Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management business unit. I worked on upstream marketing strategies for several countries to increase awareness of our cardiac therapies and reduce barriers to patients receiving our products. It was very satisfying to help move our products to standard of care in those countries. I gained numerous skills, including strategic thinking, global awareness, and working cross-functionally. As Medtronic continues to grow internationally, this experience will be invaluable.
For my second assignment, I wanted to gain downstream marketing experience. I'm now in Global Product Marketing in Diabetes, where I develop marketing programs and work closely with our field organization on the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) product line. My focus has also been on coordinating the global launch of our next-generation CGM sensors. It's rewarding to know that my work helps our product get in the hands of patients who need it.
Most satisfying LDRP experience: A team of LDRP participants developed a business case for a national nonprofit organization. We conducted a case competition to create revenue-generating recommendations, and then developed a proposal based on the winning idea. It was a great opportunity to apply our business and leadership skills to a meaningful community service project. Our efforts earned us a Medtronic Momentum Award, which recognizes employees who display a strong commitment to the community.
Benefits of the LDRP: It's a great program to explore different opportunities across Medtronic and contribute in a substantial way. I was able to explore many facets of marketing over the past three years, allowing me to build both upstream and downstream marketing skills. I gained a solid understanding of both the healthcare industry and marketing function, which will help me be successful in future endeavors.
