The Medtronic Foundation closely aligns grant making priorities to complement our overall dedication to alleviating the global burden of chronic, noncommunicable disease. We focus the majority of our grant making on innovative initiatives that improve the way the world addresses chronic health issues, maximizing our impact by funding large-scale initiatives that provide the greatest opportunity for positive change at a systemic level.

Our health grants support organizations that are raising awareness of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) on the global agenda, educating healthcare professionals in countries that lack critical infrastructure, increasing sudden cardiac arrest survival rates in the U.S., and supporting patient advocacy groups in developed countries.

Our education grants fund programs that develop the next generation of healthcare innovators and our community grants empower Medtronic employees to address specific needs of socio-economically disadvantaged people within their hometowns.

Our various businesses donate millions of dollars worth of products each year. The Medtronic Foundation often plays an instrumental role in accelerating donations by connecting our businesses with nonprofits looking for products to fulfill unmet needs in communities around the world. In 2012, the company donated products worth $7.8 million.

At Medtronic, we recognize that we cannot fulfill our Mission to alleviate pain, restore health and extend life alone. We must work closely with the healthcare professionals who deliver our therapies. Part of our role is to support medical conferences, charitable events, and research and public education programs.

We make public all donations given by Medtronic to U.S. customers or organizations affiliated with customers (including patient groups and medical societies) through a Donations Registry posted on this website on a quarterly basis.

These donations are separate from those of the Medtronic Foundation, which makes contributions to nonprofit organizations worldwide in the areas of health, education and community.

Our disaster relief efforts include providing annual Medtronic Foundation funding to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, conducting matching gifts programs in response to natural disasters, coordinating product donations for items needed on the ground, and awarding grants for both short-term medical relief and the long-term rebuilding of healthcare infrastructure in affected areas.

In addition, our disaster relief volunteer program allows employees to take up to five days of paid time off to volunteer with a nonprofit organization and assist with recovery efforts from designated major disasters.

At Medtronic, we believe that employee giving is a vital component of employee engagement. To foster participation, we let employees follow their passions and support their local communities through easily accessible giving programs, including annual United Way campaigns at our largest U.S. facilities and our Matching Gifts for Education. Both receive a dollar-for-dollar match from Medtronic and the Medtronic Foundation, respectively.

Medtronic also encourages local giving campaigns and provides guidance to employees on programs such as Donate Your Stuff, which coordinates donations of personal and household items to community organizations; Soap for Hope, which provides toiletries to those in need; and Project Warm Hearts, which brings together knitters who create hats, mittens, scarves, afghans and other hand-knit items to benefit selected non-profit organizations in the community.
