From July 1996 until September 2004, he was the Hersey Professor of Theory and Practice of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and Chair of the Department of Medicine, Physician in Chief and Director of Research at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is the previous Chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee and served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the NIH. Dr. Dzau is a member of the Institute of Medicine. He currently serves as a director of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Duke University Health System, PepsiCo, Inc. and Genzyme Corporation.
