Charitable Donations Registry

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why is Medtronic disclosing donation information?
Given the recent interest in the relationships among industry, physicians, educational institutions and medical societies, we believe it is important to make charitable donation information public. We think that transparency around donations is the right thing, and now is the right time. Medtronic is proud of the charitable support that we provide to various organizations as part of our Mission to “alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life.” We believe that our support for those organizations benefits the healthcare system and is good for patients. We believe that everyone involved with the delivery of healthcare has an obligation to maintain relationships in an ethical and forthright manner. Medtronic has always been an industry leader, and this is just another step on that path. We’re hopeful that our public disclosure of this information will reinforce the positive role that industry can and should play in the healthcare system.

  2. What information will be included on the Donations Registry?
The Donations Registry will list all charitable donations, including our support for medical conferences, charity events, and public education programs. We will post the name of every organization that receives a donation from Medtronic in each quarter, the location of the organization, the amount of the donation, and information regarding the purpose (for example, the title of a medical meeting). Because we believe it is important to provide prospective recipients with notice that any donation they receive will be made public, we will post only prospective information. In other words, any donation requested on or after May 1, 2008, if funded, will be included in Medtronic’s Donations Registry; donations made prior to May 1, 2008 and donations committed to before that date, regardless of when they are funded, will not be posted. Donation information will be posted quarterly, approximately one month after the close of Medtronic's fiscal quarter.

Donations made by the Medtronic Foundation will not be included in the Donations Registry. Information about Medtronic Foundation is publicly available at www.medtronic.com/community and at www.foundationcenter.org.

  3. Are you notifying donation applicants of your decision to make funding information publicly available?
Yes. We believe it is important to provide prospective recipients with notice that any donation from Medtronic will be posted on our website. We will post only prospective information. In other words, any donation requested on or after May 1, 2008, if funded, will be included in Medtronic’s Donations Registry; donations made prior to May 1, 2008 and donations committed to before that date, regardless of when they are funded, will not be posted.

  4. What is the scope of the Registry?Does it cover donations to organizations outside the United States?
Initially, we are focusing on donations from Medtronic, Inc.’s US operations to US organizations. We expect to expand the scope of the Registry in the near future.

  5. Will consulting payments to individual physicians be included on the Registry?
No. Payments to physicians for consulting services are payment for services, not a donation to support a charitable enterprise. The Donations Registry will not include payments for consulting services. However, Medtronic will continue to work across our industry for an appropriately structured, industry-wide process to address this. (View our statement here.)
