battery - The power source of a device.
For a pacemaker, the small battery is lithium sealed and typically lasts many years.
beating heart surgery - Conventional CABG surgery is usually done on an arrested heart (patient placed on cardiopulmonary bypass). Beating heart surgery is accomplished in a way that avoids cardiopulmonary bypass (the heart lung machine); the surgeon performs surgery on a heart while it is continues to beat.
biocompatible coatings - Special coatings on some of the equipment used during open heart surgery--these coatings are meant to prevent the heart-lung machine (cardipulmonary bypass) from damaging blood before it is delivered back to the body.
biocompatible surface - A coating which is applied to device and tubing surfaces which interface with blood during extracorporeal circulation. The purpose of this coating is to make the surfaces more biocompatible with the blood.
biofeedback - For bladder control problems, biofeedback techniques use sensors and computer screens to enable a clinician to monitor muscle activity in the pelvic floor. For treating bladder control problems, biofeedback is used to retrain muscles that control voiding behavior.
bladder control problems - Being unable to control when, where, how often, or how much urine you empty from your bladder. Bladder control problems treated with InterStim Therapy are urinary urge incontinence, nonobstructive urinary retention, and significant symptoms of urgency-frequency.
blood diagnostics - Measurements used to determine the quality of a patient's blood before, during and after an operation.
blood pump - A pumping device used to circulate blood through the extracorporeal circuit.
blood temperature control module - An instrument used to control the temperature of blood during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures
blood vessels - An extensive network of flexible tubes that carries blood to and from the heart and throughout the body. The blood vessels are the transportation system of the body. The blood vessels include arteries, capillaries, and veins.
bradycardia - (pronounced bray-dee-car-dee-ah). A condition in which the heart beats at less than 60 beats per minute. This heart rate may be too slow or irregular to meet the body's demands. (This is different than a physically fit person who may have a heart rate below 60.)
Symptomatic bradycardia is the most common medical condition requiring a pacemaker. Symptoms of bradycardia may include dizziness, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, or fainting spells. Bradycardia is most commonly caused by sick sinus syndrome or heart block.
Bradycardia may also result after an ICD delivers a defibrillation shock. If this occurs, a Medtronic ICD can deliver bradycardia pacing therapy until the heart begins to beat normally on its own again.
