deep brain stimulation - See Tremor Control Therapy.
defibrillation - An ICD therapy option used to treat ventricular fibrillation. Defibrillation consists of high-energy shock impulses.
defibrillator - See ICD.
dehiscence - A disruption or separation of the ring from the annulus.
dessicating - damaging.
diathesis
- A predisposition or unusual susceptibility to a disease.
diathermy - Therapy in which high-frequency currents produce heat in tissues to treat certain conditions.
distal - Anatomically located far from the point of reference. For example, as it relates to a blockage in a coronary, 'distal' means 'downstream' from the blockage.
drawstring channel - Channel woven into a ring through which the drawstrings pass.
drug delivery - APT Intrathecal uses a small pump that is surgically placed under the skin of the abdomen to deliver medication directly to the intrathecal space (the fluid around
the spinal cord). The medication is delivered through a small tube called a catheter that is also surgically placed. The spinal cord is like a highway for pain signals on their way to the brain, where the feeling of pain is experienced by your body. Because the drug is delivered directly to the spinal cord, where pain signals travel, APT Intrathecal can offer dramatic pain control, with a tiny fraction of the dose that would be required with pills. This helps minimize side effects.
drug pump - The pump used in APT Intrathecal is a round metal device that stores and releases prescribed amounts of medication directly into the intrathecal space. It is about one inch (2.5 cm) thick, three inches (8.5 cm) in diameter, and weighs about six ounces (205 g). It is made of titanium, a light-weight, medical-grade metal.
drug therapy - Use of drugs in CAD to dilate the coronary arteries, enabling more oxygen to be delivered (via the blood) to the surrounding cardiac tissue.
dual-chamber pacemaker - See pacemaker, dual-chamber.
