magnet check - During some
pacemaker check-ups, a clinician may hold a programmer magnet above
the pacemaker. The pacemaker will pace at a pre-set rate that disregards
the heart's natural beat. During the magnet check, the clinician can
check the programmed settings of the pacemaker and the status of the
pacemaker battery. Not all pacemaker patients will have a programmer
magnet applied.
magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) - A medical test used to produce
images of the interior of the body. MRI uses strong magnetic fields
and low-energy radio waves to create the resulting images. The strong
magnets will interfere with the functioning of a pacemaker, ICD, or
neurostimulator.
If you have one of these devices, do not participate in Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) tests without informing your physician about your implanted
device.
mattress
suture - A method in which stitches are parallel with
the edges of the wound, crossing deeply from one side to the other,
each stitch made with a separate piece of material.
median
sternotomy - The traditional incision used for CABG surgery,
located at the center of the chest (from the belly button to to just
under the chin).
medicaid - A program of medical aid financed jointly by the state and federal governments. It is designed for those unable to afford regular medical service.
medicare - A program of the Social Security Administration that provides medical care to the aged, and some disabled people.
MIDCAB - Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass; CABG surgery
done through an incision between the ribs.
Minimally
Invasive Cardiac Surgery - Surgery on the heart that
is performed either through a smaller than normal incision, or without
the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (the heart-lung machine), or both.
minute
ventilation sensor - See sensor,
minute ventilation.
mitral
valve - Valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
mortality
- Death
MRI - See magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI).
multivessel
bypass - Bypass grafting surgery on more than one coronary
artery.
myocardial
infarction - Damage or death of myocardial tissue (middle
muscle layer of the heart) caused by an interruption of blood flow
to the area.
myocardial
lead - See lead, epicardial.
myocardial
preservation - Operative perfusion techniques designed
to support the heart during cardiac procedures
myocardial
revascularization - Returning/improving blood flow to
the myocardium (heart muscle).
