valve mounting diameter - The appropriate diameter valve to implant, as indicated on the sizing tool.
valves of the heart - See heart valves.
valvular insufficiency - The state in which the heart valve is unable to fully close or fully open.
valvular stenosis - Narrowing or stricture of any heart valve.
valvular thrombosis - The presence of a solid mass which obstructs opening or closing of the valve.
vascular anastomosis - The connection (by suturing or sewing) of the graft to a vessel.
vasovagal syncope - See syncope, vasovagal.
veins - Blood vessels that return used blood back to the heart where it can be pumped to the lungs for re-oxygenation.
venous reservoir - A receptacle for holding varying amounts of venous blood during extracorporeal circulation. If the reservoir is made of hard plastic it is called a 'hardshell'; if it is made of pliable plastic it is called a 'bag'.
ventricle - One of the two lower chambers of the heart. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs. The left ventricle pumps blood to the body's organs.
ventricular fibrillation (VF) - A heart rhythm disorder that originates in the ventricles. It is characterized by an abnormally rapid heart rhythm that is also highly unstable and irregular. During VF, electrical signals are moving chaotically through the heart, preventing it from beating properly. This often results in fainting. If left untreated, it may result in cardiac arrest.
More about VF .
ventricular pacing - A pacing system with a lead attached in the ventricle. The lead is most often placed in the right ventricle to correct a slow or unsteady heartbeat caused from a condition called heart block.
ventricular tachycardia (VT) - A heart rhythm disorder that originates in the lower chambers. VT is characterized by a rapid heart rhythm during which patients may feel faint or dizzy, or even collapse. During VT, the heart does not pump blood as efficiently as it does during a normal rhythm, and rapid contractions prevent it from filling adequately with blood between beats. VT can be dangerous, life-threatening, if not properly treated.
visualization - Technology that allows the surgeon to have a better view of the surgical site or anatomy.
void - Emptying urine from the bladder.
voiding diary - A pocket-sized booklet used to record urinary symptoms (such as how often, when, how much urine, etc.).
voiding dysfunction - Being unable to control when, where, how often, or how much urine you empty from your bladder. Voiding dysfunctions treated with InterStim Therapy are urinary urge incontinence, nonobstructive urinary retention, and significant symptoms of urgency-frequency.
