Overview

Obesity is a multi-factorial disease which results in a body mass index that greatly exceeds established physical standards and is associated with numerous comorbidities. It is considered to be both an epidemic and a public health concern in the United States and around the world. The clinical evidence has clearly demonstrated that patients classified as obese have the best long-term success with and can be safely treated through individualized surgical interventions as compared to other nonsurgical weight loss programs (dieting).

In order to safely care for the bariatric patient throughout the surgical weight loss journey, perioperative personnel should understand the unique challenges presented by the obese patient.
