Covidien AMD antimicrobial dressings are part of a proven prophylactic infection prevention program. Unlike ordinary sterile dressings which do not provide an effective barrier to bacterial invasion, they contain 0.2% Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB), a bacteria-killing polymer that virtually eliminates bacterial penetration through and growth within the dressings. What bacteria does the PHMB in Covidien’s AMD Dressings fight?

Covidien AMD antimicrobial dressings contain PHMB (polyhexamethylene biguanide), a bacteria-killing polymer. PHMB attacks bacteria on and within the dressing fabric, helping keep infection out of the wound and limiting cross-contamination. Here’s how PHMB works:

  • PHMB binds to bacteria’s phospholipid (outer) membrane
  • Disrupts membrane, causing cytoplasm to leak out
  • Cell’s protective layer disintegrates
  • Cell collapses and dies
