Capnography Start-up Program for Emergency/Resuscitation

The foundation of the Covidien Implementation Connection program is feedback and shared best practice experience from hundreds of facilities, thousands of clinicians, and millions of patients worldwide. With the support of Medtronic representatives, the information and access to resources provided in this program can help facilitate the implementation process, help you promote clinical adoption and manage utilization of your capnography solution.

Step 1 - It starts with a leader

Learn how a capnography monitoring ‘champion’ helps to spearhead an effective implementation and promote greater clinical adoption on resuscitation teams and in the emergency department.

Step 2 - It takes a team

To ensure the clinical team is prepared for the implementation, it’s recommended that all emergency department and resuscitation team clinicians responsible for patient monitoring broaden their knowledge of capnography monitoring. Professional Affairs and Continuing Education offers clinical education and non-clinical education courses. Continuing education credits for nurses and respiratory therapists are available for some courses in the curriculum.

Step 3 - Equipped for success

Download resources and review information to ensure the team is prepared for the capnography solution implementation.

Step 4 - Going live

Access supplemental resources to help support ongoing usage and utility of your capnography solution.

Step 5 - Long term partners

Understand how Medtronic will remain your long-term partner by proactively providing periodic updates with new information and tools.

Step 1 - It starts with a leader

Becoming the capnography ‘champion’ for the emergency department or resuscitation team

Best practice feedback has indicated hospitals that assign a capnography monitoring ‘champion’ to help spearhead the implementation have experienced more effective utilization and greater clinical adoption. The Covidien Implementation Connection offers information, education and tools for the clinical ‘champion’ to establish a framework for success.

To begin your journey to becoming the capnography ‘champion’, review the Covidien Implementation Connection resources and access Professional Affairs and Continuing Education clinical and non-clinical education offerings that are designed specifically for emergency/resuscitation team clinicians. When you have completed all courses in the Emergency Department/Resuscitation Team curriculum , you will receive a completion certificate. Continuing education credits for nurses and respiratory therapists are available for some courses in the curriculum.

As a capnography ‘champion’ you can also expand your knowledge of capnography monitoring across multiple hospital environments, including pre-hospital/EMS, critical care, general care floor, and procedural sedation.

Step 2 - It takes a team

Establishing a knowledgeable capnography team in the emergency environment

One of the most important elements of a successful capnography implementation is product and clinical education. The Microstream™ Technology Education Pathway was developed to provide a specific, robust curriculum for clinicians to expand their knowledge of capnography monitoring. Medtronic offers access to a free, online capnography course curriculum for the emergency department/resuscitation team. On-site training will be coordinated through your Medtronic Sales Representative.

Get started now by providing the clinical implementation team to a capnography curriculum designed specifically for emergency/resuscitation clinicians. Through Professional Affairs and Continuing Eduation, clinicians who complete all courses in the emergency environment curriculum will receive a completion certificate. Continuing education credits for nurses and respiratory therapists are available for some courses in the curriculum.

We encourage you to engage your colleagues across the hospital to learn more about capnography. Capnography courses are available by area of care, including pre-hospital/EMS, critical care, general care floor, and procedural sedation.

Step 3 - Equipped for success

Preparing the team for the implementation

The Covidien Implementation Connection provides tools to ensure emergency department and resuscitation clinical teams are prepared for the implementation, including a policy and procedure development guide, a clinical bibliography, and a normal and abnormal waveform reference poster.

Start downloading now and provide the tools to the clinical staff on the implementation team. There are several resources available in print. Please ask your Medtronic representative to place an order for you.

Step 4 - Going live

Tools and resources for installation and ongoing usage

The Covidien Implementation Connection provides information and tools to ensure clinicians caring for patients in the emergency environment have what they need to help support ongoing utilization and management of the capnography solution.

Prepare for installation by downloading resources and tools and providing them to all clinicians responsible for monitoring patients. Consider distributing these resources to other individuals involved in managing the capnography solution, such as biomedical engineers and administrative staff. There are several resources available in print. Please ask your Medtronic representative to place an order for you.

Step 5 - Long-term partners

During the first year following your capnography monitoring implementation, a member of the Covidien Customer Support Center will telephone you quarterly to make sure you have the supplies, tools, resources and education needed to help you manage ongoing, effective usage of the solution. After the first year, Medtronic will remain your long-term partner by providing periodic updates via email as new information and resources become available.
