Career Path within Medtronic

Technical I am a Senior Firmware Engineer in the CRM Core Product Development group. My group is responsible for verifying that the firmware in our implantable pacemakers and defibrillators functions according its requirement specifications.

Why did you join Medtronic?

As a sophomore at Florida A&M University , I attended a Medtronic presentation, and I was very impressed with what the speaker had to say about Medtronic. Prior to hearing that presentation, I had no former knowledge of Medtronic -- what the company did, where it was located, etc. During the presentation, the speaker spoke about the mission statement, citing the fact that it had not changed since its inception--a fact I found quite profound. Additionally, he spoke about the annual holiday event, where patients with Medtronic devices are brought in to share how their quality of life had been improved since using Medtronic devices, and I was greatly touched by that. The company seemed very passionate about what it was doing, and I knew instantly that I would enjoy working for a company like Medtronic. I was able to see that working for Medtronic would allow me to remain technical and also gain personal fulfillment while doing so. Compelled by the presentation, I pursued an internship with the company, but was not given the opportunity due to my lack of experience. Years later, while pursuing my Master's degree at Georgia Institute of Technology, I was given another opportunity to interview with the company. This time, unlike the previous, I was armed with the experience that I needed, and the rest, so to speak, is history.

How is Medtronic differentiated from its competitors?

I have not worked for many companies -- Medtronic is my first full-time job outside of school -- but from my internship experiences I can say that I have not worked for a company that is so wholly dedicated to its mission. It is the heartbeat of the company. It keeps us in sync, moving to the same rhythm. No matter what a person's background, etc., the mission unites us by giving us a common vision.

What does Medtronic have to offer to new college graduates?

Medtronic is the world's leading medical device company and that, in and of itself, says a lot. There are numerous opportunities for growth, professionally and personally. Each employee is valued within the company. From the newest hire to the longest tenured employee, you are given the opportunity to make an impact. Whether you do so or not is really up to you.

What are your other interests?

Community service, music, reading, creative design, trying different culinary cuisines, and traveling.
