YEAR IN REVIEW

May 2007 – April 2008

As our company grows to serve more and more patients, so does the impact of our philanthropy. Through a combination of Medtronic Foundation giving, the talents and gifts of our 38,000 employees worldwide, Medtronic’s donations of cash and medical devices, and creative partnerships with our community organizations, our contributions exceeded $55 million last year. In each of our giving focus areas — health, education and community — we helped people live healthier and more productive lives. Here’s a snapshot of our accomplishments:

Health

  • Expanded the reach of the Patient Link program to more organizations outside the United States. Partnered with 108 patient organizations in the U.S., Canada and Europe to make grants totaling $4.2 million. Published HealthConnect: A Practical Guide to Community Outreach, so that health care advocates reach people of all backgrounds.

  • Coordinated World Heart Day events in several European countries, supporting the World Hearth Federation’s efforts to raise public awareness of healthy lifestyles.

  • Awarded $1.1 million in HeartRescue grants to 44 organizations worldwide. We revised the U.S. HeartRescue program to focus on school-based training and education programs to create a new generation of people who recognize the signs of sudden cardiac arrest and take action when it occurs.

  • Made grants to 93 health organizations in 15 Medtronic communities in the United States through our CommunityLink program, including a grant to the Jewish Community Fee Clinic in Santa Rosa, California, which provides free health care to uninsured residents in Marlin and Sonoma counties.

  • Strengthened our relationship with Children’s HeartLink (CHL) with grants to support sustainable pediatric cardiac care in India and South Africa. The Medtronic Foundation has partnered with Children’s HeartLink for almost 30 years, and provided more than $2.1 million grants, employee volunteers and medical products for surgical procedures in countries including China, India, Ukraine and South Africa.

Education

  • Supported 74 Medtronic Fellows at 10 targeted schools in the United States and the United Kingdom through scholarships, fellowships and national diversity grants totaling $909,387.

  • Partnered with Keio University in Tokyo, one of the oldest education institutions in Japan, to develop a clinical trial research training certification program. The program will set standards for systemic clinical research training for undergraduate and graduate medical students in Japan, and includes development of an appropriate curriculum, Web-based training modules and translated materials, to help integrate clinical research content into medical school curriculum.

  • Committed $150,000 to the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering Enrichment Program, a center of excellence in technology, science and math education. Our grant supports socio-economically disadvantaged middle- and high-school students and prepares them for technology-based careers.

  • Provided employee mentors to science students at Ireland’s Galway Education Centre; to children studying economics and financial literacy through young Enterprise Switzerland; to young readers at schools near our World Headquarters campus in Minnesota; and to budding scientists and inventors involved in FIRST Robotics teams.

  • Helped underserved audiences gain access to science education programming at the Minnesota Zoo, a world-class regional center of science education and conservation programs that reaches almost a million students and their families each year. We supported the Zoo Mentor Program, Zoomobile and Science Education Scholarship Fund, and also funded the Medtronic Minnesota Trail.

Community

  • Matched employee donations dollar-for-dollar to support communities in need through annual United Way campaigns in 10 communities in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, for a total of $5.2 million. In addition, we matched $132,000 in employee donations to four global organizations helping residents recover from disasters in Myanmar and China.

  • Supported employee volunteerism and giving projects including a community project competition in the Netherlands; fundraising and volunteering for the Galway Cancer Hospice in Ireland; fundraising runs, walks and bike races in almost every U.S. community where we have employees; and “Day On” Day of Service at which more than 200 employees volunteered to spend Martin Luther King Day, traditionally a “day off,” providing a “day on” of service at Second Harvest Heartland food shelf.

  • Promoted community fitness and health through our partnership with the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. We provided more than 300 employee volunteers and welcomed 21 Global Heroes during the Marathon weekend events in October, and hosted the second annual Medtronic TC Kids Marathon Fun Run to kick off online training and fitness resources for children and families.

  • Made over $1.5 million in CommunityLink grants to health, community and human services organizations, with guidance from local employee-staffed CommunityLink communities.

  • Expanded our Volunteer Grants program world-wide, providing grants up to the equivalent of $500 U.S. employees who donate 25 hours of their time to a qualified nonprofit or nongovernment organization.
