FRIDLEY, Minn. – (June 1, 2006) – Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) announced a new philanthropic effort today with the unveiling of a community billboard. Medtronic will highlight company-supported, non-profit organizations and their local causes and events.
The illuminated, two-sided billboard is located on the southwest corner of Medtronic’s world headquarters property bordering Interstate 694 in Fridley, Minn. More than 123,000 cars pass the location each day. Inaugural billboards debuting this month feature Minnesota FoodShare and Courage Center, two long-time Medtronic community partners.
“Medtronic works with many Twin Cities community organizations that deserve recognition for their great work,” said Art Collins, Medtronic chairman and chief executive officer. “The community billboard is an innovative way to help these local organizations raise awareness for their causes, events and accomplishments, and highlights organizations that positively affect the community.”
Under the program, Medtronic will provide selected organizations with billboard space and pay for production and installation costs, in addition to offering creative assistance. Medtronic and the Medtronic Foundation gave nearly $50 million in worldwide grants and medical device donations in the company’s fiscal year 2006, supporting more than 170 Minnesota non-profit organizations with grants exceeding $7.4 million.
