What are the symptoms of heart failure?
Many people suffer from heart failure without knowing it. Your doctor can diagnose heart failure, but there are some signs you can look for. Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle becomes damaged, and the heart's pumping function is reduced. This means less oxygen is delivered to the body and brain, creating symptoms like:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of the feet and legs
  • Lack of energy, feeling tired
  • Difficulty sleeping at night due to breathing problems
  • Cough with "frothy" sputum
  • Swollen or tender abdomen, loss of appetite
  • Increased urination at night
  • Confusion, impaired memory

The impact of heart failure
Heart failure is a debilitating chronic cardiac illness that affects some 5 million Americans. Each year, about 550,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed. Heart failure often robs patients of their ability to live full, independent lives and is responsible for more hospitalizations in the U.S. than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, millions of Americans are living with heart failure but may be unaware of their condition.
