Neuromodulation and Spinal Business Overview
Our neurological products include neurostimulation systems, drug delivery systems, neurosurgical implant devices, surgical access products, and diagnostic and therapeutic systems for chronic pain and neurologic, urologic, and gastrointestinal disorders. Eight businesses within our division work together to apply our therapies and products to provide comprehensive solutions to significant neurological disorders.

Activa® Tremor Control Therapy utilizes an implanted neurostimulation system to stimulate targeted nulcei in the thalamus to suppress tremor associated with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. Stimulation can be non-invasively adjusted to meet each patient's needs. Activa Therapy is the first completely new approach to controlling tremor in more than 30 years.

Medtronic Pain Therapies™ encompass pain management therapies from our neurostimulation and drug delivery areas. Both Neurostimulation and Intrathecal Drug Delivery can be effective options for patients with pain who are experiencing inadequate pain relief or uncomfortable side effects from their current pain treatments.

Enterra™ Therapy treats chronic nausea and vomiting associated with gastroparesis when conventional drug therapies are not effective. Gastroparesis is a stomach disorder in which food moves through the stomach more slowly than normal. in some patients, this condition results in severe, chronic nausea and vomiting, which cannot be adequately controlled by available drugs. These patients have difficulty eating and may require some form of tube feeding to ensure adequate nutrition.

InterStim® Therapy for Urinary Control is the first implantable treatment to use electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves to manage urinary urge incontinence, significant symptoms of urinary incontinence and urinary retention and can improve the quality of life for many of the 13 million Americans who suffer from the embarrassing and confining effects of incontinence.

Intrathecal Baclofen (ITB™) Therapy eases intractable spasticity in patients with CP, traumatic brain injury, and stroke by delivering Lioresal Intrathecal (baclofen injection) directly to the intrathecal space in small, precisely controlled doses using a pump that is surgically placed.

Medtronic Neurosurgery is committed to providing superior products for the Cranial Neurosurgery market. These products include a wide variety of PS Medical® silicone elastomer valves, catheters, and shunts for hydrocephalus management; external drainage products for the treatment of traumatic brain injury and invasive monitoring; neuroendoscopes for improved surgical access; repair of congenital or traumatic cranial defects; and cranial closure products for quick and secure reattachment of skull flaps.

Medtronic Functional Diagnostics is in the business of developing and distributing systems for investigation of functional disorders. This is accomplished by measuring: reflux in the gut; pressures and electro muscular activity in the gut and urological tract; and neuro physiological activity throughout the body. Systems include software for analyses of patterns and measurements to aid the physician first in diagnosis, and then in selection of the most effective therapy.

Products from Medtronic Sofamor Danek treat a variety of disorders of the cranium and spine, including traumatically induced conditions, degenerative conditions, deformities, and tumors.

PROSTIVA® RF Therapy is an in-office treatment for men over 50 suffering from an enlarged prostate - benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. PROSTIVA RF Therapy is an effective, safe and fast treatment that is associated with few side affects and adverse events. The therapy delivers low-level radio frequency energy through a tube inserted into the urethra to shrink enlarged prostate tissue while preserving the urethra and adjacent structures from harm. This precisely focused energy ablates prostate tissue, reducing constriction of the urethra and relieving many of the obstructive and irritative voiding symptoms patients suffer due to BPH.
