Did You Know — Winter 2006
The Personal Therapy Manager (PTM) is a handheld device that allows a person who is receiving intrathecal drug delivery from a SynchroMed® II Drug Delivery System to request an additional dose of medication pre-programmed by their doctor.
Is the Personal Therapy Manager right for you?
For those already receiving intrathecal drug delivery therapy through the SynchroMed II system, the PTM may be a good option for you if you are involved in activities that increase your pain, your pain is unpredictable, your intermittent pain is inadequately relieved by oral medications, and/or you are interested in becoming more involved in your pain management therapy.
What are the benefits of the Personal Therapy Manager?
- A new option to manage unpredictable pain episodes.
- Allows the person to become actively involved in their own pain management therapy.
How often is this device used?
The number of times the PTM is used depends on the prescription programmed into the pump by your doctor. Your doctor will discuss this with you and base it on your pain needs and patterns.
When will this device become available to you?
The PTM is only available for use with the Medtronic SynchroMed II Drug Delivery System. If you are using the SynchroMed EL® Drug Delivery System to treat your pain, you will need to wait until it is time to replace your pump to consider the PTM. At that time you can work with your physician to determine if the PTM is right for you. Availability may also be dependent on your medical benefit plan, among other factors. The battery life of the SynchroMed EL Drug Delivery System is expected to be 5 to 7 years, depending on flow rate.
