In 1978, Robert H. Pudenz, M.D., an early proponent of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting technology, and Rudi Schulte, a master watchmaker, joined forces to create Pudenz-Schulte (PS) Medical. The company's original mission was to assist neurosurgeons with the task of bringing their product ideas to fruition via top-quality workmanship and state-of-the-art technology. By 1991, PS Medical's dedicated pursuit of technical product perfection, via both in-house research as well as outside collaboration, had earned it global market leadership in the area of CSF applied technology.

On October 12, 1995, Medtronic, Inc. of Minneapolis, MN acquired PS Medical, and as it folded the new addition into the family, the brain-child of Dr. Pudenz and Mr. Schulte became known as Medtronic PS Medical.

In 1998, Texas-based Midas Rex, the industry-leading manufacturer of pneumatic cranial drill systems, was added to the growing Medtronic family of companies. Due to the easy synergy of the PS Medical and Midas Rex product lines, the natural creation of a single sales group, Medtronic Neurologic Technologies, to market the two companies' output, followed quickly thereafter.

On May 1, 2001, Medtronic PS Medical became known as Medtronic Neurosurgery, further solidifying the mission to aid neurosurgical professional and patient alike with the technical advancement and innovation of our cranial products.

Now, joined together under the umbrella of Medtronic Neurologic Technologies, the dedicated employees of sister companies Medtronic Neurosurgery and Medtronic Midas Rex stride confidently into a future of continued technological breakthroughs, success and global leadership in the field of cranial neurosurgery.

Medtronic Neurosurgery is committed to providing products for the Cranial Neurosurgery market. These products include a wide variety of PS Medical® silicone elastomer valves, catheters, and shunts for hydrocephalus management; external drainage products for the treatment of traumatic brain injury and invasive monitoring; neuroendoscopes for improved surgical access; repair of congenital or traumatic cranial defects; and cranial closure products for quick and secure reattachment of skull flaps.
