Vent Tube Procedure

A tiny vent tube, about 2 mm in size, allows the micropressure pulses to pass through the eardrum and reach the inner ear

Before you begin Meniett® therapy for your Ménière’s disease, you need a tiny vent tube placed in your eardrum. The Meniett’s micropressure pulses have to move from the outer ear canal to the middle ear and inner ear. But your eardrum is a barrier. The tiny vent tube allows the micropressure pulses to get where they need to go.

Vent tubes are often used for ear conditions. Also called a myringotomy, the vent tube procedure takes about 10-20 minutes and is usually done in the doctor’s office. There’s always a small risk of infection where the vent tube is inserted. Your doctor can tell you more about this risk and answer any questions.

He or she will check the tube periodically to make sure it’s still in place and working (not blocked). The vent tube is only there as long as you need Meniett therapy for your Ménière’s disease. Once the vent tube is removed, the eardrum usually heals completely.

After the Vent Tube Procedure

After the vent tube procedure, you may be monitored for about an hour. You can usually go home after that if all goes well. You’ll have little or no pain but may have a temporary, slight discharge from the ear.

Your ENT or ear specialist will give you specific instructions about living with your vent tube, including when to get immediate attention and when to schedule follow-up appointments. He or she may also prescribe antibiotic eardrops for a few days.

To reduce the chance of bacteria getting into your ear through the vent tube, it’s a good idea to keep your ears dry. Use earplugs when you’re bathing, showering, or swimming, especially if you swim in untreated water such as a lake or river.

When to Begin Using Your Meniett Device

Your doctor will tell you when to begin Meniett therapy after your vent tube procedure.
