Activa® Therapy

Overview of Surgery for Activa Therapy

During the procedure to implant an Activa System, one or two leads, each with four 1.5 mm electrodes, are surgically implanted in the brain.  Subcutaneous extensions connect the leads to a neurostimulator implanted near the clavicle or, in the case of younger primary dystonia patients, in the abdomen. The electrical stimulation can be noninvasively adjusted to meet each patient's needs.

According to the indication, patients may have two Soletra® or Itrel™ II neurostimulators, each of which creates and delivers the electrical signals to a single lead, or a Kinetra® neurostimulator, which creates electrical signals and delivers them to two leads.
