Educational Opportunities

Medtronic provides comprehensive training programs that are designed to provide you and your staff with a continuum of learning opportunities, from selecting your first patients to managing them in your practice. The goal for physician training is to provide physicians with the skills and knowledge necessary for using InterStim^® Therapy safely and effectively.

Requirements for Physician Training

• The prescribing physician should be experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms and should be trained on the use of the InterStim System.
  
  
• The implanting physician should be trained on the implant and use of the InterStim System.
  
  
• Initial training options include:
  • One-day Fulfillment:

  Option 1.  Attend a “Theory and Technique” course at a leading institution to observe cases and attend an interactive lecture.
  Option 2.  Complete the InterStim Physician Education Program on-line course at www.training.interstim.com and then complete product training with a simulator.

  • Phased Fulfillment:
    Complete the online interactive program, and at a later date, participate in one of the following options to fulfill the procedural training requirement:
    • Observe an InterStim Therapy chronic lead placement at an experienced physician site.
    • Have an experienced InterStim Therapy physician serve as a “coach” for the first implantation of a chronic lead.  The trainer provides verbal coaching only and does not scrub in.
    • Train on InterStim Therapy products with a simulator.

• e-Learning Program
  This interactive Web-based program includes instruction on anatomy, surgical procedures, patient selection and management related to InterStim Therapy.
  Registration: Go to www.training.interstim.com to obtain a username and password.
  
  
• Simulator Training
  Life-like simulation models can be used for practicing test stimulation and lead implant. Contact your Medtronic Representative.
  
  
• InterStim Therapy for Health Care Professionals
  Medtronic offers a variety of educational programs to help nurses and other clinicians learn patient selection, programming, and patient management for InterStim Therapy. Medtronic recognizes the vital role of clinicians in patient management and offers programs to provide the information, tools, and practice sessions to help PAs, NPs, RNs, LPNs, and other health professionals manage InterStim Therapy patients.
  Basic and advanced programs
  • One-day introductory course on patient selection and
    system programming
  • One-day advanced course for experienced clinicians focused
    on patient selection and patient management
    
    
• Teleconferences and Webcasts
  Teleconferences and Webcasts, led by experienced physicians, are designed to share information on best practices. The format typically includes a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.
