Medtronic SynchroMed® II Programmable Drug Infusion Pump
The Medtronic SynchroMed® II Programmable Drug Infusion Pump Model 8637 is available in two reservoir sizes: 20 mL and 40 mL. The pump precisely delivers a prescription according to instructions programmed by the clinician. Drug is held in the pump reservoir, which is constructed with a bellows design that allows the reservoir to expand or contract according to the drug volume. Pressurized gas fills the space below the reservoir. At normal body temperatures, the gas expands and exerts constant pressure on the reservoir. This pressure advances drug into the pump tubing. The battery-powered electronics and motor cause the roller arm in the peristaltic pump to rotate, precisely pushing the programmed dose out through the catheter port and into the catheter. A valve protects the pump reservoir from being over-filled or over-pressurized.
The catheter access port (CAP) allows direct access to the catheter and cerebrospinal fluid and may be used for diagnostic tests. The CAP has a funneled design that allows only a 24-gauge or smaller needle to pass through. This safety feature helps prevent inadvertent access during pump refill procedures (in which a 22-gauge needle is used). The pump housing has suture loops that can be used to anchor the pump in the pocket.
