Treatment Options for Atrial Fibrillation
A number of treatments for atrial fibrillation (AF)
are available. The purpose of treatment is to:
- Regain and maintain normal heart rhythm
- Control the heart rate (pulse)
- Prevent stroke
Your heart doctor will choose the treatment based on
factors related to your heart rhythm, symptoms, and other medical conditions.
Medications
to control heart rate, reset the rhythm, or prevent blood clots from forming.
Cardioversion
in the hospital: A timed, small electrical shock that restores the heart's
natural rhythm. The shock may be delivered by an external defibrillator in the
hospital or by an internal catheter during a laboratory procedure.
Catheter Ablation:
A procedure that makes the small area of the heart causing the problem unable
to send any signals. There are several different types of ablation, one of which
involves the implant of a pacemaker.
Implantable
devices: A pacemaker may be prescribed to maintain a normal heart rhythm after
an ablate and pace procedure. Also, a defibrillator with atrial defibrillation capabilities
has been shown to improve quality of life and reduce the symptoms of AF.
Surgery:
Surgery is recommended for patients in chronic AF, for whom other treatment options have not been effective.
