Medical Condition: Type 1 Diabetes

Roberta was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 14 years old, which she found particularly difficult to control until using an insulin pump to help manage her disease. For the past two years, Roberta has served as a volunteer for Educational Association in Diabetes (Colônia Diabetes Weekend), a program that offers young people living with diabetes activities, support, and the opportunity to share experiences. Roberta’s Bakken Invitation Award will expand the Colônia Diabetes Weekend program so more participants can join each year.

ROBERTA'S STORY

“I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 14, and since then have gone through several treatments. Today, I use an insulin pump, which brought the certainty that diabetes will always be part of me and that my insulin pump has become a part of my body. Since the onset of diabetes, I have been living in a healthier way, full of life, and relating positively with people.

“I believe that nothing is impossible when you become the author of your own story, influencing those around you with the same health condition in a positive and inspiring way. Acceptance, care, optimism, and resilience are required so that diabetes becomes easier to control. I accept that all of us living with this disease need a bit of courage and determination.

“Participating in and volunteering with Educational Association in Diabetes, known as Colônia Diabetes Weekend, has transformed my life and the lives of many children, teens, and adults living with diabetes in Brazil. Being a volunteer and a participant in this extraordinary project has enabled the rehabilitation of my heart and my treatment. Everyone who participates is motivated to smile, to dream, to care, and to convey hope to the world.

“I am constantly challenged to achieve better diabetes control and to encourage my friends at Colônia Diabetes Weekend to take control of their diabetes and their futures. Today, I can lead others to participate in our educational program on diabetes and let people know diabetes should not be a reason to live without possibilities.”

"Take a deep breath and keep believing! Believe in unexpected blessings, in miracles and stunning victories come your way as a reward for your effort."

ROBERTA'S WORDS OF INSPIRATION

“Do not stop believing; take a deep breath and do not give up. Believe with all your heart that you’re destined to do great things, because if a word can change everything, imagine what an attitude can do. Nothing is impossible.”
