Getting a Replacement – DBS Therapy
We want to ensure that your DBS System continues to function properly. Before your battery runs out, you’ll need to replace the neurostimulator(s) of your Medtronic DBS System through a surgical procedure. The DBS leads and extensions can typically stay in place and be reconnected to the new neurostimulator(s).
On average, your neurostimulator battery should last 3 to 5 years. Battery life depends on how much stimulation you’re programmed to receive each day.
Your clinician will closely monitor the performance and battery levels of your neurostimulator at each of your appointments. If you start to show signs of increased symptoms from your dystonia, it could be an indication that your DBS System isn’t working properly and needs to be replaced.
Be sure to tell your clinician right away if you experience any unusual symptoms, side effects, or changes in your condition.
