About Insertable Cardiac Monitors

If you experience infrequent, unexplained fainting, your doctor may prescribe an insertable cardiac monitor. The monitor records your heart's activity over long periods of time. So the next time you faint, your doctor can download information from the monitor, which may help your doctor determine whether the fainting is caused by an irregular heartbeat.

What Is It?

An insertable cardiac monitor is a small implantable device that continuously monitors heart rhythms and records them automatically or when you use a hand-held patient activator. The device is implanted just beneath the skin in the upper chest area, during a simple procedure.

Benefits and Risks

By looking at your heart rhythms before, during, or after a fainting spell, your doctor can identify whether your unexplained fainting is related to an irregular heartbeat. Other types of heart monitors are attached on the outside of your body for 2 to 60 days.
