Frequently Asked Questions:

Question Answer
How do I open the instrument? The instrument is opened by depressing the black button at the rear of the instrument.
How do I know that the Single Use Loading Unit is loaded properly? The instrument will not close if the Single Use Loading Unit is not properly loaded and will not close with a previously fired Single Use Loading Unit
How can I tell if a Single Use Loading Unit has already been fired? After a Single Use Loading Unit had been fired, the yellow pushers that eject the staples will be visible at the front face of the cartridge. They may or may not be sticking out of the face.
How do I know that the instrument has fired? On completion of the second full squeeze, the handle will lock in the compressed position.
The yellow pushers segments are not always protruding the same amount in a cartridge after firing are they broken? The yellow pushers are assembled in segments (up to 3) depending on the length of the cartridge, only the 30v is one piece. These segments are all fired to the same position, however once opened, they may not remain protruding the same amount.
Do I need to place the alignment pin manually. No, if the pin is not advanced manually the instrument will automatically advance it upon closure. Proper pin placement in the anvil should however, be verified either visually or tactically prior to firing the instrument.
What should I do if the pin does not return? If the pin mechanism is obstructed during opening it may remain forward, if this occurs simply manually return it to the rearward most position until you hear a "click". Note: if the pin is not fully returned, the next cartridge will not load.
What range is recommended for each Single Use Loading Unit size? The instrument must be able to compress the tissue comfortably down to the following thickness prior to firing: 1mm for a 2.5mm staple, 1.5mm for a 3.8mm staple & 2.0mm for a 4.8mm staple. Tissue thickness should be carefully evaluated using the "specification chart" in the IFU.
Does the instrument have an adjustable or progressive clamping mechanism? Yes, the DST™ series TA™ has a pre-clamp position to allow the surgeon to properly position and check the tissue prior to full clamp up.
Can different size staples be fired from the same instrument? Yes, the 90, 60, 45,and 30mm can all be fired with either a 3.5mm or 4.8mm staple cartridge. The 30v can only be used with a 2.5mm staple cartridge
Are the staples made of titanium? Both DST Series™ GIA™ and TA™ Staplers fire titanium staples
Is there latex in the product? Both DST Series™ GIA™ and TA™ Staplers are latex-free.
What sizes are available for the DST Series™ Staplers? The new DST™ Series TA™ is available in 90, 60, 45, & 30mm lengths with both 3.5mm and 4.8mm cartridges. The 30mm is also available in a 3 row 2.5mm vascular version.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question Answer
How does Directional Staple Technology work? During surgery, surgeons may encounter applications that may challenge traditional surgical staplers. Directional Staple Technology was designed to deliver improved clinical performance in these challenging situations. The technology incorporates two components: the use of new staple wire that bends more consistently and reliably in the plane that it is supposed to; and a redesigned anvil geometry that provides a large target area for the staple to form. The outcome that you see when you fire a new DST Series™ TA™ or GIA™ stapler is more consistent and reliable staple formation.
Do the DST Series™ GIA™ staplers have tissue gap control? Tissue gap control is a stapling innovation belonging only to Medtronic. The DST Series™ GIA™ staplers incorporate new innovations that go above and beyond tissue gap control to provide hemostasis and reduce deflection. Specifically, the increased strength of the beam used in the DST Series™ GIA™ staplers combined with Directional Staple Technology allow for proper staple formation even in challenging applications.
Are the staples made of titanium? Both DST Series™ GIA™ and TA™ staplers fire titanium staples.
Is there latex in the product? Both DST Series™ GIA™ and TA™ staplers are latex-free.
What sizes are available? GIA60 mm: 2.5, 3.8, 4.8 GIA60 mm (Knifeless): 3.8 GIA80 mm: 3.8, 4.8 GIA100 mm: 3.8, 4.8
The cartridge on the DST Series™ GIA™ Staplers looks shorter than the previous GIA™. Does it still contain a fresh knife? The new DST Series™ GIA™ staplers and all other GIA™ and Endo Gia™ staplers provide a new knife with each firing.
How is the firing force? The firing force of this GIA™ stapler is significantly smoother than that of previous generations.
Why doesn't the DST Series™ GIA™ stapler have an alignment pin? The DST Series™ GIA™ stapler is the first of its kind to offer atraumatic placement of the instrument on tissue by eliminating the need for an alignment pin. The combination of the increased beam strength and Directional Staple Technology make this possible.

092001 LDS™ Powered Ligating and Dividing Stapler 3

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question Answer
How many staples are delivered by the Powered LDS™? The Powered LDS™ may be applied 15 times. The Powered LDS™ contains 30 staples, delivering two staples with each application.
Should there be a staple in the jaw prior to firing? The staple is deployed after the tissue to be ligated and divided is placed in the jaw. There should be no staple visible in the jaw prior to firing.
How do I fire the Powered LDS™? After mobilizing the tissue to be ligated and divided, place the Powered LDS™ jaw around the tissue. The tissue must be confined completely within the jaw before squeezing handle. To ligate and divide the tissue within the jaw, squeeze the handle of the instrument completely, then release. Do not pull on the tissue while firing.
How do I know how many firings are left in the Powered LDS™? The Powered LDS™ provides 15 firings of 2 staples each. It features a clear window that provides visibility of the number of firings remaining in the device. The indicator updates with each firing. Once the final set of staples has been fired, the safety interlock feature prevents the knife blade from being applied to tissue.
The Powered LDS™ locked up after the last set of staples was fired. How do I remove it from the tissue? If the Powered LDS™ is fired after all the staples have been depleted, the safety interlock will prevent the knife blade from being deployed. The jaw will close without releasing. The jaw may be manually released by turning the cap at the base of the instrument handle marked "TURN TO RELEASE."
What are the Powered LDS™ staples made of? The staples delivered by the Powered LDS™ are titanium.
How large a vessel may be ligated and divided with the Powered LDS™? The Powered LDS™ may be used to ligate and divide vessels up to 7 mm.
What energy source is used to drive the Powered LDS™? A cylinder of gas, containing hydrofluorocarbons and alcohol, is used to drive the Powered LDS™.

Surgiclip™ Clip Applier

Long Description:

The Premium Surgiclip™ II clip applier has application in many types of surgical procedures to occlude vessels and other tubular structures and for vagotomy, sympathectomy and radiographic markings. The Premium Surgiclip™ II clip applier consists of a body with attached handles and an applier shaft with an integrated cartridge containing 20 or 30 titanium clips. The Premium Surgiclip™ II clip applier has a selectable ratchet function. The ratchet ON position provides instrument control of the closing sequence. The clip cannot be released from the jaw until the device is fully cycled. Once completed, the handles will return to their original position and a new clip will be automatically fed into the jaw. In the ratchet OFF position, the closing sequence is fully manual. Relaxation of pressure on the device handles at any time in the closing sequence will result in the clip releasing from the jaw. This feature allows physicians to vary the degree of clip closure, depending on clinical need. Once completed, the handles will return to their original position and a new clip will be automatically fed into the jaw.
