"Surgery was the easiest part for me."
Unfortunately, Sharon is no stranger to cancer care. When she was diagnosed with uterine cervical cancer at age 28, she went to four doctors before finding one who would be the partner she needed in making the best medical decisions for herself. Years later, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she again sought out a partner she could trust. She found that in Dr. Beth DuPree.
“Sharon came to me as a second opinion with a rather large tumor in a relatively small breast,” Dr. DuPree says. This made her case somewhat complicated: Cutting out just the tumor (a lumpectomy) would mean cutting out a large chunk of breast tissue as well, making reconstruction difficult. A mastectomy is never an easy choice to make. But Dr. DuPree walked Sharon through her options.
“Dr. DuPree is the most amazing woman on earth, and I mean that,” Sharon says. “My first appointment with her, she spent almost two hours drawing pictures, writing down all the information for me. She encouraged me by saying that once I had made the decision of what procedure to go forward with, I would be at peace, and she was right.”
Together, Sharon and Dr. DuPree looked at all of Sharon's options and decided on a nipple-sparing mastectomy. During the surgery, Dr. DuPree would use the PEAK PlasmaBlade®, a soft tissue dissection device that allows for reduced thermal injury to tissue and reduced scarring compared to other devices.
“The surgery was actually one of the easiest parts [of my cancer treatment] for me,” Sharon says. “Within two weeks, I was showing my new mastectomy to everyone I met — my friends, my colleagues, my family, even flashing women in restrooms, showing them there were amazing options available to them.”
The patient testimonial above relates an account of an individual’s response to treatment. The account is genuine, typical and documented.
