This segment will review Frequently Asked Questions
The MyCareLink Heart mobile app uses Bluetooth® Low Energy on the patient’s smartphone or tablet – replacing the bedside monitor – to transfer ICM data to the clinic via the Medtronic CareLink™ Network.
The insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) with BlueSync Technology, has built-in safeguards that protect both the device and the data it sends. The ICM data is encrypted using the same National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) government standards that exist in other critical applications, like mobile banking, before it is transmitted to the CareLink network via MyCareLink Heart.
The ICM is not connected to the Internet, and it does not have an IP address, unlike other connected consumer products.
The ICM does not accept programming from unauthorized sources. It can only be programmed by a trained healthcare professional using the Reveal LINQ Mobile Manager programmer or through the CareLink network.
Please go to www.medtronic.com/security for up-to-date security information.
Active means the app is able to communicate with your heart device and clinic.
Your heart device communicates with the app throughout the day. If your heart device has data to share, the app will notify your clinic that there is information to view.
Just like other apps, if the patient’s smartphone or tablet has Wi-Fi or cellular connection, the data on the app will be available on the patient’s smartphone or tablet for a viewer to see. We recommend protecting the patient’s smartphone or tablet with a PIN code, swipe gesture, fingerprint, or other security feature. Also, like other apps, the “remote wipe” feature will also delete the MyCareLink Heart mobile app.

The MyCareLink Heart mobile app has a minimum system requirements for the mobile device and operating system version. The patient will need to update, or replace, their mobile device to continue to use the app to transfer data.
No, only one heart device can be connected to the MCL Heart app at a time. MyCareLink Heart does not look for and cannot simultaneously connect to multiple heart devices from multiple patients.
Yes, however, it is recommended only 1-2 mobile devices be used at a time. Before using their second phone/tablet, the patient will need to have paired their first phone/tablet.
They can then use their username and password to log in on their second phone/tablet.
Patients with symptom marking enabled will only be able to mark symptoms from one mobile device at a time. To make a mobile device the primary device for symptom marking, go to Menu > Settings > Symptom Recording. A non-primary mobile device can be set to primary at any time if there is a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
The language can be changed within the user’s phone/tablet settings. If the user’s phone/tablet is not set to one of the available languages, the MyCareLink Heart app will display in English.
Visit MCLHeart.com for a list of available languages for the app.
Encourage patient to have their smartphone or tablet with them periodically throughout the day and ensure the following:
The communication between the app and the patient’s ICM can be interrupted if the smartphone or tablet is not near the patient (within 5 feet or 1.5 meter). Sending the ICM data to the Medtronic CareLink™ Network can take up to 24 hours. The patient’s data may not be successfully sent to the Medtronic CareLink™ network if the smartphone/table is not near the patient (within 5 feet or 1.5 meter)
After four days without communication between the app and the LINQ II device or the app and the CareLink network, the patient will receive a notification (or text or email if enabled in app settings) with instructions on how to reconnect.
The app is able to act as a symptom marking device if symptom marking is enabled in the ICM. The patient will initiate a symptom mark by tapping the RECORD NEW SYMPTOMS button on the app home screen. The patient enters symptoms they are feeling. The application sends a record symptom command to the LINQ II device which records the symptom ECG as determined by the device.
If symptom marking is enabled, only one mobile can be used at a time to record symptoms. The patient defines which mobile is the primary mobile for conducting symptom recording via the app settings.
To make a mobile device the primary device for symptom marking, the patient must open the app and navigate to MENU → SETTINGS → Symptom Recording and follow the prompts. A non-primary mobile device can be set to primary at any time if the device has a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
A patient can only record symptoms on one mobile at a time. Symptom history is accessible on any mobile device if the patient is logged in to the app.
The ICM protects itself from unauthorized access. Communication to devices enabled with BlueSync technology is only accepted from Medtronic apps and monitors. Connection attempts by non-Medtronic devices or apps are rejected by the ICM.
Automobiles typically use Bluetooth Classic (BT) to communicate with a mobile device to stream audio due to the high bandwidth needs for streaming audio. The LINQ II device uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and is not compatible with Bluetooth Classic. A car will not attempt to establish a connection with the ICM and the ICM is not able to detect a Bluetooth Classic signal.
Patients who normally have their Bluetooth turned ON should not experience any change to how frequently they need to charge their mobile device’s battery. If a patient does not normally keep Bluetooth running on their phone, they may notice a decrease in the battery life of their phone while using the app.
The Education tile – found on the home screen of the app – provides access to information about living with an ICM, remote monitoring, as well as troubleshooting within the patient app.
The Help section of the patient app provides additional information to assist patients. Access HELP through the MENU button and select HELP.
This feature determines frequency of communication between the patient’s monitoring option and their LINQ II ICM. This feature is OFF by default for all indications. When enabled, this setting will affect the device’s battery longevity.
Consider enabling this feature for MyCareLink Heart mobile app patients only when increased connectivity between the patient app and the device is clinically preferred.*
