OVERVIEW
Throughout history, surgeons have struggled to improve patient outcomes related to anastomosis and the associated complications. What began as the use of suture and clamps has evolved into the utilization of today’s highly effective stapling devices.
Surgical stapling is considered an advancement over hand suturing methods in many situations and is often the standard in surgical procedures. Members of the perioperative team, led by the surgeon, can provide enhanced patient safety and outcomes by being knowledgeable and well-trained in the utilization and selection of stapling devices.
