On 12th September, we commemorate the day in 1985 when Professor Dr Med Erich Mühe of Germany, performed the first keyhole surgery to remove a gallbladder (laparoscopic cholecystectomy).
Keyhole surgery, also known as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), is when the surgeon operates using a camera and miniaturized tools. The incisions are small (like a keyhole) rather than the longer scars from open surgery. In the chest, keyhole surgery is called Thoracoscopy, in the abdomen it’s laparoscopic surgery.
