Treatment options for overactive bladder

There are several treatment options for overactive bladder (OAB), including neuromodulation. If other treatments haven't worked for you, talk to your doctor about how neuromodulation may be able to help.

The first treatment for people with OAB is lifestyle changes which include non-invasive and non-medical treatments:

  • Bladder training with a bathroom schedule
  • Pelvic floor muscle training (Kegel exercises)
  • Watching what you eat and drink
  • Cutting down on caffeine
  • Getting more exercise

There are many prescription medication options to treat OAB, which can help some people. They work by targeting nerve signals to the bladder to block or help control muscle contractions.

  • All medications may cause side effects
  • 70% of people taking medications for OAB stop within six months.3

If OAB symptoms don’t improve after trying lifestyle modifications, talk to your doctor about your eligibility for the following advanced therapy options:

  • Sacral neuromodulation (SNM)
  • Injection of Intradetrusor OnabotulinumtoxinA

Communication is what helps your bladder work properly.

The InterStim™ system gently stimulates the nerves in the bladder. This can improve how the bladder communicates with the brain and ultimately improve bladder function.4,5,6

Small and discreet.

Implanted during an outpatient procedure, the InterStim™ device goes just beneath the skin.

In addition to risks related to surgery, complications can include pain at the implant sites, new pain, infection, lead (thin wire) movement/migration, device problems, undesirable changes in urinary or bowel function, and uncomfortable stimulation (sometimes described as a jolting or shocking feeling).Talk with your doctor about ways to minimize these risks.
