Are insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs) safe?

The smallest ICMs or loop recorders have a very low infection rate. Possible risks associated with ICMs include, but are not limited to, infection at the surgical site, device migration, erosion of the device through the skin, breakdown of the tissue near the device, bleeding or fluid accumulation under the skin, pain and discomfort, local tissue reaction, tissue damage and/or sensitivity to the device material. A person living with or considering an ICM should talk to their doctor about potential risks and benefits of insertable cardiac monitors.
