Can someone with a heart device have an automated external defibrillator (AED) used on them?

Yes, today's heart devices are designed to allow for the free-flow of external energy through them without causing harm to the device. Place the chest pad on the side opposite the device, and the abdominal pad on the same side as the device. It's also a good idea for any device patient who had an AED used on them to get it checked by a doctor afterwards to be safe.
