Can someone with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) resume sexual activity after getting the device?
Returning to sex is a normal part of the recovery process. Most people with ICDs return to intimacy when they feel comfortable. The ICD will allow a person’s heartbeat to rise normally, for example when having sex, without giving a shock. If you receive a shock during intercourse, follow all instructions provided by your doctor in the event of a shock. Your doctor will determine what caused the shock and can make changes to the ICD settings if needed.
